AN EX-BOOKMAKERS' could become a 24-hour adult gaming, amusement and bingo centre.

Ladbroke's former premises on Deane Road would be converted into Merkur Slots if a planning application by British bingo, arcade gaming and gambling company Praesepe is given the green light.

The company, which owns the high street gambling arcade chain Cashino, has also applied for a bingo premises licence from the council.

The new venue promises to offer complimentary coffee, tea, soft drinks and snacks, including small re-heated finger food and dry snacks.

The proposed gambling establishment would be open for 24 hours a day, seven days a week and employ five full-time members of staff, according to a planning statement.

It said: “The use will contribute to a wider diversification of uses in the [Deane Road local shopping centre], while helping to improve the evening and night-time economy. The proposed change of use is considered to be a proactive response to the changing retail and town centre environment, which is reflected in national policy and guidance documents.”

Planning agent Bidwells also argue that the 24-hour operation will not have a negative impact because there are no residential properties in close to the site.

The Bolton News understands that the former Ladbrokes branch closed late last year.

One local business said that the betting shop disappeared “overnight” some months before Christmas – although mechanics at a neighbouring garage said they knew that the closure was coming.

One member of staff told The Bolton News that the bookmakers shut because the business was “not working”.

Ladbrokes has been contacted for comment.

Planning officers are due to decide the outcome of the application by the end of February.
