A MAN in his 20s has died after his car crashed into a lamppost during a police chase.

Officers on patrol in Manchester Road (A6) had attempted to stop the White Volkswagen Golf at around 1am this morning when the driver sped off towards Chequerbent Roundabout.

They then lost sight of the car before finding it a short time later having crashed into railings and a lamppost on the approach to the roundabout.

Emergency services rushed to the area but the man died at the scene.

Chequerbent roundabout remains closed this morning while police investigations take place.

Officers are also appealing for anyone with any information about the crash to come forward.

Inspector Danny Byrne, of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Sadly a man has lost his life as a result of this collision and his family will be supported by specially trained officers.

“The scene will remain in place while the investigation is ongoing which means a number of road closures will be in place throughout the morning so commuters are advised to avoid the area where possible.

“As enquiries progress, I would appeal for any witnesses or anyone with any information that could assist our investigation to please get in touch.”

The incident has been referred to the Independent Office of Police Conduct by GMP’s Professional Standards Branch.
