A FRESH bid is being made to inject new life into Atherton's changing high street.

Plans have been unveiled to turn the former Waterfield's bakery shop in Market Street into a food and cocktail bar.

Danielle and Paul Evans, who run The Lock, in Twist Lane, Leigh, are behind the blueprints for the site.

Under their proposals, the first floor windows would be replaced by Juliette-style balcony openings to improve the outlook and new boundary walls, with sound barrier features, would be erected in the rear yard.

A planning statement submitted to Wigan Council says: "The changes identified as part of this planning application would bring this dated vacant building up to modern standards with excellent aesthetic appearances to all elevations whilst maintaining a more fit-for-use purpose to the property."

If approved, the scheme would be the latest leisure outlet to be installed in the Market Street area, since the Taphouse became the first craft ale bar there in 2017.

The likes of Cazbar and The Lamp Bar have also opened their doors and The Cabinet, launched at the former NatWest Bank, is also securing a following across the area.
