A PROJECT to convert an old bus into a shelter for homeless people is on schedule to be completed by the end of this month.

Construction teams have been busy making alterations to a former First bus that was donated to Bury Homeless Project by the operator.

Once completed, the bus will be used as a space to provide one-to-one support, as well as offering up to six homeless people a bed for the night.

One of the project founders told the Bury Times: “We are bridging the gap so that rough sleepers are supported. We will take them in, help them to rehabilitate and look to find them accommodation. This will mean that rough sleepers have somewhere warm and secure to go while other support is put in place.”

Work on the project has involved pulling out seating, rewiring and removing existing infrastructure to make way for new beds to be installed.

A kitchen area including a sink and counter has also been added, as well as a sofa and office space. Structural work has involved moving steelwork, replacing and sealing windows and fitting wooden flooring.

A new generator has just arrived, which will enable the bus to run 24/7, manned by Bury Homeless Project staff, and the painting is under way. The finished product will feature a shower and toilet facility. The team says the work has been made possible thanks to “an overwhelming response” from residents and businesses. A Just Giving page has raised £3,868 to date.

Johar Hussain, who set up the fundraiser, says the finished product will “change the lives” of homeless and vulnerable people. He said: “I want to thank each and every person who has donated. We have had an overwhelming response.”

A spokesman for First Bus said: “We’re delighted to discover this bus will soon be starting a new life after many years of service. When the charity contacted us last year we were pleased to help.”

The team is currently looking for a permanent location for the vehicle and has called on businesses and landowners across Bury who may be able to support a rental to contact them on 07522 504 772. A secondary option would be to tax, insure and MOT the bus so that it can be parked on a public road, however this would require additional fundraising.
