LAW lords have ruled that a robber who broke a jeweller's nose during a £25,000 raid on his shop was treated too leniently.

Daniel Burtak, 33, had stolen a car in the Bolton area before driving up to Carlisle on false registration plates, the city's crown heard previously.

Once there Burtak, who had his face covered, vaulted the counter at St Nicholas Galleries Jewellers and began snatching gems.

The Bolton News reported how when owner Craig Carruthers tried to intervene he was kicked and punched by the intruder, suffering a broken nose.

Burtak fled in the stolen car before it was abandoned with jewellery still inside the vehicle. He was eventually tracked down in a second stolen car and tried to flee via nearby woodland.

But he was caught by police, who found more jewellery in undergrowth, close to where he was arrested.

Burtak, of no fixed address, was later convicted of robbery following a trial and jailed for eight years.

Two staff members at the jewellers, including one who had worked there for 30 years, later quit.

Attorney General Geoffrey Cox QC referred the sentence to the Court of Appeal as being 'unduly lenient' and judges agreed, increasing Burtak's term to 11 years.

Later Mr Cox said: "Burtak is a callous robber who left many injured and shaken following his violent spree.

"A repeat offender, Burtak continued to commit offences despite being granted numerous second chances so it is right for his sentence to be increased."

Prosecutors said this was a "professionally planned commercial robbery" after he undertook 'reconnaissance' of the shop beforehand.

In 2007, Burtak was convicted over the robbery of a Bolton jewellers. He was also jailed in 2016 after burgling a food wholesalers.
