YOU were never too far away from an elephant in Bolton town centre with the unveiling of a series of mosaics in a new subway back in 1988.

The two elephants - a feature of the town’s coat of arms - were created by tilers Michael Connor, 25, and David Walsh, 27.

They were also asked to create decorative panels featuring Bolton Town Hall, the Parish Church, Samuel Crompton’s spinning mule and Hall-i’-th’-Wood in the new heritage underpass which was a feature of the new St Peter’s Way extension.

The pair, who worked for Bolton Ceramic Centre, had to work to a complex design supplied by the tile importers.

Members of Bolton’s environmental services committee got a sneak preview of their work when they headed underground for the first time.

The underpass, which gave access from Charles Street direct to the heritage centre was part of a £3,3 million extension scheme to St Peter’s Way.
