An outisde lane closure remains in place in both directions of the M66 due to barrier damage following a crash.

Traffic was stopped on the M66 at around 3pm on Tuesday after reports of a crash on the southbound carriageway.

Posting on Twitter, Highways England stated that traffic had been temporarily stopped on the M66 southbound from junction one for Manchester Road, towards junction two for Bury/Heywood.

A lane closure had also been put in place on the northbound carriageway.

Traffic officers, maintenance crews and the ambulance service were all on scene.

A spokesperson for Highways England said: "Due to barrier damage caused by the collision on the southbound carriageway, traffic officers have implemented a lane closure on the northbound carriageway for safety."

At 4pm on Tuesday, Highways officers had released all traffic, but stated that an outside lane closure would remain in place in both directions due to barrier damage.
