Greater Manchester Police have urged drivers to give space to police vehicles with their lights on after an officer's car was struck in Sussex.

The Sussex Roads Police vehicle was protecting a broken down vehicle on the A23 at Hickstead, north of Brighton, when it was hit by a lorry driver who failed to see it.

Most of the damage is to the rear-driver's side wheel and its surrounding bodywork.

A tweet published by Surrey police Roads Policing Unit warned: "If you see flashing blue and red lights ahead of you, at minimum we expect you to ease off the accelerator and prepare to slow further in needed.

"Plan ahead in case a lane is shut. Eyes up, look, plan, react."

One officer was treated for minor injuries, although both officers involved have been described as "OK" on social media by colleagues.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: "At 10.33am a lorry collided with the rear of a police vehicle on the A23 northbound at Sayers Common.

"Officers had been responding to a broken down vehicle in lane one when the collision occurred.

"The lorry driver has been spoken to, however no offences have been identified at this stage."

GMP Traffic retweeted the post from Surrey Police, adding: "Give us some space, we want to go home as well. Fortunately the officer is OK. As for the car.... maybe not ."
