Officers watched on in horror as a driver sprinted across SIX lanes of the motorway to evade them.

GMP traffic police stopped a van that was towing another van on the M61 near junction four.

When they stopped the vehicles, the man in the cab of the towed vehicle took off across six lanes of moving traffic to get away.

The force tweeted about the incident shortly after 5pm, later replying to say that the runner had sucessfully gotten away.

The later tweet went on to say: "There's no way I'm running across 6 lanes of a live motorway as I want to make it home safe at the end of a shift.

"I'm happy enough that one of the two offenders are now sat in a cell."

The driver of the van was arrested for theft after officers discovered that the vehicle was being towed on false plates as it was recently stolen.
