Crowds would gather outside the Co-op store in Oxford Street to see the new window display in 1956 which gave folk in Bolton a little glimpse of Transatlantic culture. A model of the New Jersey turnpike had been created and, according to the Evening News, shoppers gazed in wonder at the state of the art transport system. They clearly had never travelled on it as the turnpike was - and is - famous for its massive queues!
