EMPTY land which formerly housed terraced homes could be redeveloped.

Plans have been submitted to Blackburn with Darwen Council proposing to build five new bungalows on land at Hollin Bridge Street in Blackburn.

The site, currently grassland, has been empty since the early 1990s when properties which stood there were demolished.

Following demolition of the homes, the site was partially used as a car park but is currently unused.

Southend-based developers Clements Court Properties say the scheme would provide vital accommodation for the disabled and people over 55 and the firm is working with a registered provider to take on the bungalows if permission is granted.

A spokesman said: “After a number of pre-application discussions with the council, we decided to design a proposal led by demand.

“Proposals for terraced or semi-detached properties were not supported and so to adhere to the standards and principles the planning authority set, a proposal consisting of bungalows seemed most appropriate

“The design of the homes combined with the easy access to local amenities make the site the ideal location for such a development.”

"The scheme will redevelop an under-utilised site within the urban area of Blackburn. The site is in a sustainable location for new housing in close proximity to public transport services and facilities.

"The housing to the west of the site is characterised by terraced properties built in the mid-late 19th century, the terraced row on Hollin Bridge Street previously extended over the site with the site once comprising 13 terraced properties prior to demolition in the late 1980s or early 1990s."

The 0.26-acre site was sold at auction in September 2018, having formerly been used as a car park for about 10 cars, with the remaining land being open grassland.

The site fetched £56,000 when it went under the hammer.
