A WOMAN has died in a crash near Whalley.

Police and paramedics were called A59 yesterday at around 1.45pm after a Citroen C3 and a wagon crashed between the Petre and Bramley Meade roundabouts.

Police said a woman in her 70s, the driver of the Citroen, had died at the scene, and another woman, also in her 70s, was taken to Royal Preston Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the HGV did not suffer any serious injuries.

The police said its drone was also deployed to the scene.

The road was closed for around eight hours while investigations were carried out by police.

PC Laura Kendall said: “We would like to ask anyone who saw the incident or who caught anything on their dash cam of the incident as it happened to please get in touch with us to help us determined the circumstances around the collision.

“Our thoughts are with the woman’s family at this sad time.”

An ambulance service spokesman said: "We sent an advanced paramdic, two rapid response vehicles, an ambulance, two air ambulances and a community first responder to the scene.

"We took a lady in her 70s to hospital with serious injuries."

Traffic was severely delayed between Clitheroe and Whalley for several hours, with travel time up to one hour between the town and village.
