SEAN Dyche feels consistency in selection has played a big part in consistent performances – particularly from his defence.

The Clarets clocked their 11th clean sheet of the season in the goalless draw at Newcastle United last weekend. Only Liverpool have earned more to date.

Captain Ben Mee, his centre half partner James Tarkowski and goalkeeper Nick Pope have been every presents in the Premier League this season.

And Dyche feels it is no coincidence that such continuity has been reflected in performances.

“I think it helps when a unit plays together, and when a team plays together often. I think the slow down in rotation has been seen in the last season or two generally,” said the Burnley boss.

“From our point of view when you keep units together I think it helps.

“Generally speaking we’ve kept it together. Lowts (Matt Lowton) has been in and out and Bardo (Phil Bardsley) between them. Erik Pieters’ started the season, Charlie (Taylor) came in and the two centre halves have played a lot, and with Popey (Nick Pope) of course.

“I don’t think it’s everything but I think it does help if you can keep a unit together, particularly when it’s a defending unit.”

Burnley had a boost on the injury front ahead of the visit of Spurs with Ashley Barnes resuming full training, although the striker is not yet ready for first team action.

“Barnsey is back on the grass with us which is another step forward for him, training with the first team group,” said Dyche.

“He’s not ready for this weekend or anything but he’s back in full training so that will do him the world of good. He’s happy to be out there of course.

“Johann (Berg Gudmundsson) is still not quite there. It’s minor (calf) but a frustrating one for him and for us.

“Lowts we’re just really protecting at the moment as he comes back from a knee injury. Hopefully it’s not going to turn into anything serious. We don’t think it is at this stage but he’s working with the medical team at the moment.”
