AN inquest into the death of a 37-year-old man found dead at a hostel found he took his own life

John Paul Jones, 37, was found hanged in the bathroom of a room at the Grosvenor Guest House, on Bradford Street, Bolton, and pronounced dead at Royal Bolton Hospital late on October 14 2019.

The court heard that Mr Jones had struggled since the death of his mother, when he was just 16, in 1999, and most recently the death of his father, in August 2019.

A statement by his brother, James Jones, who was not present at the opening, read by the coroner, Alan Walsh, described how Mr Jones had struggled with alcohol, drug and mental health problems for most of his life, especially after losing his mother.

The coroner said: “The loss of his father was a major factor in relation to the death of John Jones.

“John couldn’t cope without his father.”

Mr Jones had told the mental health service that he was not happy with the service he was receiving, and had struggled to find accommodation through most of 2019.

He had been unemployed since 2002 and had been living at the Grosvenor from August 2019.

The court also heard that Mr Jones tried to end his life on a number of occasions with his brother signalling major concerns on the night of John Jones death.

James Jones had been in contact with his brother throughout the day, trying to persuade him to not do himself any harm.

However, after he had lost contact with him late at night, he called the hotel manager who found Mr Jones unconscious in the ensuite bathroom.

An ambulance was called immediately with resuscitation efforts attempted for over 75 minutes.

The coroner described that resuscitation efforts initially showed promising signs, and that paramedics were able to get his heart beating again.

However, after prolonged efforts the ambulance team declared that his injuries were “unsurvivable” and Mr Jones was pronounced dead at Royal Bolton Hospital at 11.53pm.

In the time leading up to his death he had told his brother that he was sorry, and that he was sad and in a lot of pain.

The coroner ended by saying that the death of his parents was a major factor in his own death, but that his death was not foreseeable.

Mr Walsh recorded a verdict of suicide as a result of hanging.
