The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in Bolton has risen to 13, Public Health England announced.

In response to the ongoing pandemic, Mayor of Bolton Cllr Hillary Fairclough shared a message on Youtube. She said: "I just wanted to tell you that I am thinking of you and to express my sympathy for all of you who are affected by the coronavirus."

The Mayor thanked all of those working hard during this time, from medical staff to supermarket workers who are keeping shelves stocked.

As strict measures are being enforced across the to control the spread of the virus, Royal Bolton Hospital have revealed that all non-urgent operations which were due to take place until the end of May have been cancelled.

Urgent and emergency cases and cancer treatments will continue as normal. Patients expecting scheduled surgery will be contacted directly.

A statement from the hospital said: "We thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.

"This change means that we can train staff and adapt some of our spaces to be better able to deal with COVID-19.

"Your support for us is really important at this difficult time for everyone."

Bolton Hospice has recommended fewer visitors to protect their patients. The charity advised that only immediate family or carers visit patients where possible.

Meanwhile, Bolton Council has announced that it will not be taking any event bookings for the town centre for the foreseeable future, and all bookings for the immediate future have been cancelled.

Decisions have not been made for IronMan UK or Bolton Food and Drink Festival.

The Albert Halls is closed and those with tickets for events will be contacted for refunds or different dates.

The venue does remain open for pre-booked weddings, although this is subject to review.

The Central Museum, Aquarium, History Centre, Smithills Hall and Hall i'th'wood will be closed to visitors from tomorrow, although the public will still be able to access the grounds at Smithills Hall.

Central Library and libraries in Horwich Farnworth and Harwood will all remain open. Loan dates will be extended and any fines accrued during tis time will be waived by staff.

Pest control will be still be operating, however for visits to outside areas only and the One Stop Shop will remain open for people to make online and telephone enquiries.
