A MAN died from sepsis after discharging himself from hospital following surgery and failing to attend appointments, a coroner has heard.

At the opening of the inquest into the death of 51-year-old Adam Dawson police coroner’s officer Neil McCaffrey told how he was found unconscious on February 14 and taken to hospital.

Mr Dawson, who was said to have a history of self neglect and use of alcohol, had recently had surgery on his left knee following a complex fracture.

“He self-discharged shortly after his operation and subsequently missed all appointments,” said Mr McCaffrey

Despite treatment an infection worsened Mr Dawson, of The Pungle, Westhoughton, died at the Royal Bolton Hospital on February 19.

His death was recorded as being due to multi-organ failure brought on by sepsis resulting from an infected knee joint.

Acting senior coroner Alan Walsh adjourned the inquest for a full hearing to take place on June 11.
