A FIRE has broken out at a flat above an Indian restaurant.

Fire crews were called to the building above Mumbai Express in Sutherland Road, Brighton just before 1pm.

Using two fire engines, hose reels, and breathing apparatus, East Sussex Fire and Rescue managed to bring the flames under control.

There were no reports of injury and the cause of the fire is not known.

A witness said he had seen the blaze as he walked past on his allotted daily exercise break.

He said: “I was walking past ten minutes ago and I saw the fire trucks and a bunch of black smoke coming out the window and the front door.

“The crews put out the flames. I could see six or seven fire fighters.

“There were a few people watching outside. They were all social distancing, I’d add.

“The fire was right on my road — I didn’t expect to see something like this on my daily walk.”
