GREATER Manchester Police (GMP) says it has received an "incredible response" from retired workers who are returning to the force to serve the public during the coronavirus crisis.

It follows an appeal which was launched by the force asking ex-workers to step forward and help with the efforts to police the public during the pandemic.

The number of former staff members who have contacted GMP but the force is in the middle of deciding which areas they are needed most.

GMP Superintendent Arif Nawaz said: “Following our appeal for retirees to return to the force, we have received an incredible response and I would like to thank each and every one of you who have got in touch to offer your help in such unprecedented times.

“The teams are now working through these one by one, ensuring we are prioritising the areas of demand where resource is most required.
