REGULARS at the Morris Dancers pub in Morris Green hit on a novel way to spread some special Christmas cheer back in 1975.

For they decided to have one less pint a week in their local and donated the money to go towards buying toys for local youngsters.

The present drive was organised by John Waterworth who noticed that the pub’s pile of pennies wasn’t growing very rapidly.

“We wondered what we would do for Christmas and then we hit upon this idea,” said John.

A couple of raffles were also organised and more than 50 regulars committed to having one last pint. As a final gesture the amount they raised was doubled by the brewery.

The £156 raised bought an Aladdin’s Cave of toys for youngsters at the children’s home in Old Kiln Lane and the Elizabeth Ashmore Children’s Home which a dozen regulars delivered.
