A MOTORIST was clocked driving at 74mph on a 20mph road in Bolton that has been tormented by speeding.

The speed of the car on Ainsworth Lane in Tonge Moor at around 12.30pm yesterday, Tuesday, has added to fears that “it is only a matter of time before someone is killed” on the road.

Chairman of volunteer group Tonge Fold Neighbourhood Watch, Dave Edmondson, said the speed was the highest that has been recorded there since the organisation was set up in October 2018.

The Bolton News:

The high speed that was recorded on Ainsworth Lane on Tuesday afternoon

It is far from an isolated incident with another motorist found driving at 65mph at 3.15pm on the same road on Monday.

This is despite 10 new 20mph signs being put up in the area, paid for by the group.

Dave said: “Doing 74 in a 20mph road is ridiculous.

They are doing speeds faster than the motorway limit in a residential area.

"Even when police or PCSO officers are monitoring speeds drivers are still speeding - they don't seem to care.

"It is only a matter of time before someone is killed."

Dave says Ainsworth Lane and Archer Avenue are being used as routes to bypass traffic lights at Bury Road and Crompton Way.

He is hoping roads will be enforced with speed cameras and has voiced concerns as primary schools are set to allow more children to go back in a few weeks.

But there is only so much his volunteer group can do.

Dave said: "We are volunteers who have commitments.

"If I did not have to do something about it that would be fantastic.

"If we could help everyone in Bolton we would but we can't do it."

Dave is also working to deliver other signs in the scheme area.
