HUNDREDS of people queued for their coffee fix this afternoon as Starbucks reopened several stores in the North-East.
At Metrocentre in Gateshead, hundreds of vehicles snaked their way into the car park as cars backed up onto the main road.
This was the scene at the Metroasis retail park which was inundated with customers desperate to take advantage of the newly opened drive-thru premises.
Starbucks have so far reopened several stores across the North-East at locations including Stockton, Hartlepool, Consett and South Shields.
The retailer said it would be offering the majority of its drinks menu, although its food offering would be limited to popular items for the duration of the pandemic.
Starbucks said stores had implemented 'upweighted' handwashing, cleaning and social distancing measures - while only paper cups will be issued.
Alex Rayner, General Manager, Starbucks UK, “We are proud to be back serving our communities with the phased reopening of our stores, starting with Drive-Thru and a handful of stores for takeaway only.
"Although our stores will look and feel a bit different with social distancing measures, plexi glass screens and upweighted cleaning procedures in place, the role coffee plays in creating connection and community hasn’t changed.
"Now, more than ever, having something familiar is incredibly important."
