CONCERNS over a rise in gambling, excessive drinking and drug-taking have been aired during the lockdown as people stay indoors.

Bolton Council’s executive cabinet member for wellbeing, Cllr Sue Baines, said the local authority is working on a plan to support gambling addicts.

And she confirmed the local authority is teaming up with Bolton CCG to support people with alcohol or substance misuse.

Cllr Baines said: “It is too early to tell what extent gambling may have increased locally since the beginning of lockdown, but national data has highlighted some concerns that some people may be struggling.

“Gambling can have a negative effect on the health and wellbeing not only of the individuals themselves but their families as well.

“As a council we work closely with the Greater Manchester Gambling Harm Reduction Programme to raise awareness of the harm gambling can do.

"We are also working on a local plan to ensure people can access the support they need.

“National data suggests that while some people have cut down on the amount they drink since the beginning of lockdown, others may be drinking more than usual.

“It is important to keep track of the amount we drink and try as much as possible to stay within the government guidelines.

“As a council, we work closely with our partners in the CCG to provide a wide variety of support and guidance to those struggling with alcohol or substance misuse.

“This includes the Achieve drug and alcohol service, run by Greater Manchester Mental Health, which is continuing to provide vital services at this difficult time.”
