TWENTY fire crews are currently fighting a huge fire on an industrial estate near Wigan.

Firefighters were called to the scene at Sankey Valley Industrial Estate in Newton-le-Willows shortly before 11.10am and on arrival crews found a blaze measuring about 30 metres by 15 metres.

Smoke is billowing into the skies and can be seen around the region.

Four fire engines were initially called to deal with the blaze but that number has quickly swelled to 20, such is the ferocity of the flames.

Shortly after 1pm Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said the blaze had been declared as a major incident.

This has now been declared a major incident. 20 fire engines are now in attendance, as well as the combined platform ladder, high volume pump and incident command unit.

A spokesman said: "Firefighters are working in really challenging heat conditions. 

"Road closures are in place around the area. Please avoid the area and keep windows and doors closed."

Smoke can be seen from other towns such as Wigan and across the borough.
