A POLICE officer has spoken of his horror after the discovery of a mutilated dog in its back garden.

Mid Sussex Prevention Inspector Darren Taylor said the crime was the most “despicable” he has seen in his 20 years in the force.

The mutilated dog was found in a Haywards Heath garden on May 11 and police think footage of the attack is circulating on social media.

Insp Taylor said: “I have seen some shocking things in my career, but I have never seen anything this despicable. I truly believe that no matter what walk of life you come from, you would find this disturbing and disgusting.

“This awful and vile event took place in the Bentswood Road area of Haywards Heath.”

The RSPCA visited the property after concerns were raised.

Police are urging anyone with any information, or who may have the video, to come forward.

Insp Taylor said: “What has been brought to my attention is so shocking and disturbing that even after nearly 20 years in the force it even made me feel ill. Sometime, possibly in the last two weeks, a poor dog was attacked in its own back garden and mutilated by persons unknown.”

A spokesman for the force said: “Anyone who has the video footage or has any information that may help the police investigation is asked to report it online or call 101, quoting serial 1136 of 26/05.

“You can also contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or report it online.”
