ROBBERS armed with machetes stormed into a post office and assaulted a member of staff before fleeing with cash.

Police were called to a report of an armed robbery at the post office on Richmond Drive, Leigh.

Two men entered the premises and attacked a 64-year-old shopkeeper who was taken to hospital.

No arrests have yet been made in connection with the incident and enquiries are ongoing.

A Greater Manchester Police spokeswoman said: "A 64-year-old man was taken to hospital with minor injuries and has since been discharged after two men - who were armed with machetes - entered a post office on Richmond Drive and assaulted the shop keeper before they fled the scene with a quantity of cash.

"No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing.
