TIPS in the borough will see some changes over the next few weeks.

From today, scrap metal and rubble will be accepted at both sites.

The latest change forms part of a scheduled increase in services available at the household recycling centres.

Cllr Adele Warren, executive member for environmental services, said: "There's lots of things that we have to consider, such as queues, staffing, and the processes for the waste and whether they're up and running.

"Some of our processes are quite a long chain, and it's very easy to hold up – if we've got a factory that processes plastics for clothing that has staff on furlough then it affects the chain right the way up.

"I really appreciate that members of the public have been extremely patient and understanding, it's been quite challenging for residents.

"If we can bring things online quicker and safely then we would like to do that, there's been quite a big effort to get things running safely and that's our main concern."

When tips reopened on May 2, only bagged household rubbish fit for the grey bin could be taken to the sites.

Two weeks later, on May 16, sites began accepting residual waste, garden waste, wood, and cardboard.

In a fortnight, the centre on Salford Road will reopen seven days a week, up from weekend only hours.

The site was unable to open full time due to concerns that queues could hold up domestic waste wagons, causing delays in household bins being emptied.

Residents will also be able to dump carpets, electrical items, tyres, oil, and batteries from June 13 too.

After that, textiles will be accepted at both sites from June 27, and mattresses from July 6.

The off and even number plate system will remain in place for the time being.
