THE branch director at Bury Samaritans has used National Volunteers Week to pay tribute to the volunteers working to provide support to those struggling during lockdown.

Following Government confirmation that Samaritans volunteers are critical to supporting vulnerable people, the Bury branch has been working to ensure that they are able to provide emotional support to anyone in crisis.

Chris Mills Branch Director at Bury Samaritans said: "In this national volunteer week, I would like to thank Samaritans everywhere and most especially our amazing volunteers in Bury.

"Bury Samaritans has been part of our community since 1982, providing a listening ear to anyone who needs support, which has been possible through the public’s kind donations. "

Volunteers that are able to carry out shifts at Bury branch are following strict guidelines on hygiene standards and social distancing. Their situation is to be continually monitored to ensure that volunteer safety is prioritised.

The group has also been chosen by Mayor Tim Pickstone as his Charity of the Year, alongside his George House Trust.

Cllr Pickstone has said as Mayor he wants to particularly celebrate the important work undertaken by volunteers across the Borough, adding that "Bury Samaritans support people through some tough times and we will do what we can to support the work they do."

Bury Samaritans is also appealing for donations from local residents to help ensure its volunteers can continue to support people struggling to cope during this crucial time.
