MOTORISTS who park on a pavement should receive a fine, penalty points or even community service, according to a new study.

According to the latest research by online parking portal YourParkingSpace.co.uk almost two-in-10 want to see a £50 fine or less, one-in-10 favour a £100 fine or more, while about one-in-20 want to impose three points on a driving licence or even community service.

Even more revealing was that almost two-in-10 thought that motorists who park on the pavement are selfish.

But while some would like a harsh clampdown on pavement parkers, there was also a sizeable number, almost four-in-10, who wouldn’t want to inflict any sort of fine or punishment at all.

Harrison Woods, managing director at YourParkingSpace.co.uk, said: “The issue of pavement parking has always fiercely divided the nation, for some it is a daily occurrence while for others it is not something they face regularly, and the levels of preferred fines and punishments also reflect this.

“Indeed, our new research shows that some people want severe penalties, including driving awareness courses, while for many Brits it does not seem to be an issue that deserves stern intervention.”

Further findings from the survey of 500 people found that four-in-10 would report someone parking on a pavement if it is banned across the UK, something that might happen following a government consultation which is due later this year.

However, that is not soon enough for some as the study also found that two-in-10 would like to see an immediate ban.
