TRIBUTES have been paid to a "well-loved" former primary school head teacher who went the extra mile for pupils, parents and colleagues throughout his career.

Trevor Newton, who lived in Westhoughton, joined Crompton Fold Primary School in the mid-1980s as a deputy head teacher and was in the post for a few years before being promoted to head teacher.

He served in the top job for around four years, gaining admiration from staff for his dedication and friendly approach to his work.

He left Crompton Fold and went on to work as a teacher at Roscoe Fold Primary School and continued in the classroom when the two schools merged to become Leverhulme County Primary School in 2006.

He retired around 10 years ago, and after years of battling ill health, he has died aged 68.

Former teacher Carol Rushton worked at Crompton Fold and Leverhulme County for 32 years, including two stints as Trevor's colleague.

She said: "Trevor was very well-loved - he was so helpful and so kind.

"If you had a problem you could go to him and he would help you as much as he could. He went above and beyond - he was dedicated to his job.

"He was one of those really nice people that everyone got on with and was a pleasure to work for.

"The children absolutely loved him. He knew a lot of the parents as he taught them before teaching their children."

Carol added that Mr Newton left his role as head teacher at Crompton Fold as he struggled to look after his parents at the time, who were both ill.

Mr Newton was the head teacher at Crompton Fold when Chris Abalain attended as a pupil.

Chris said: "Mr Newton was the most jovial man around the school and always wanted the children to be happy.

"If you had a problem he would be there to get to the bottom of it and cut it out.

"And he had a great rapport with the parents, my mum thought he was a great man too and he loved to have a laugh with her.

"I was lucky enough to have seen him about 10 years ago and we had a good long chat, and took a great interest in my French studies as he was looking at getting a property in France.

"He'll always have a special place in his former pupils' memories."
