Fire crews have put out a vehicle fire on the M61 near junction three southbound.

A Vauxhall Astra was found alight on the hard shoulder, the owner had vacated the vehicle and it is believed they were seeking help.

One lane was closed as a result of the incident but now the road is fully reopened.

The car will be recovered from the area by Highways England.

Two fire engines from Farnworth attended the incident.

Watchmanager Cross said: "There was a Vauxhall Astra on fire on the hard shoulder heading southbound just before the junction three turn off.

"The fire has all been put out now, two fire engines from Farnworth turned up and firemen used breathing apparatus and a hose reel.

"Highways Agency was in attendance. No one was in the vehicle at the time, evidently they had gone to get help.

"The vehicle will be receoved by Highways England. All lanes have been reopened."
