A DRIVER was stopped before the load was found to be insecure with two bald tyres supporting the vehicle.

The driver was stopped by a Greater Manchester Police patrol in Chorley New Road on Monday, where they were also found to not be wearing a seatbelt

The vehicle was prohibited from moving and issued a PG9 - a notice given for mechanical problems or for the condition of a vehicle's bodywork and equipment.

Bald tyres increase the risk of aquaplaning on wet roads, as well as being more susceptible to punctures.

Among other things, they can also cause a lack of control, hydroplaning, blowouts and understeering.

A large vehicle would be particularly hard to control if driving conditions were exacerbated by bald tyres.

UK rules requires motorists to have a minimum 1.6mm of tread left over the central three quarters of their tyres.

Below this the rubber is deemed illegal and drivers risk a fine and three points on their licence for each bald item.

The driver was summonsed by police, according to GMP Traffic.
