A GREATER Manchester Police (GMP) officer has "gone the extra mile" to help an elderly woman cope during the coronavirus crisis.

Amanda Melling, who works as a crime scene investigator for the force, made contact with the woman in her 80s at the start of the pandemic.

And Amanda discovered that the resident required help and had a lack of support from family members.

So she took it upon herself to work with local services to get the assistance that the woman needed such as food deliveries and repairs to her home.

Proud of her contribution, GMP labelled Amanda an "unsung hero" for her efforts.

A GMP spokesman said: "One of our crime scene investigators, Amanda Melling, has gone the extra mile to help a vulnerable member of the community.

"When Amanda had attended the house of the elderly lady in her eighties, she saw that she was clearly in need of assistance with little family support around her.

"At the start of the pandemic, Amanda made contact with the woman to check on her and has worked with local services to get her support she needs, such as food deliveries and repairs to her home."

The Team Bolton community of volunteers, partners and council staff are offering help to people who need support, including the delivery of food and essential items such as medication.
