Four leisure centres reopened across the borough at the weekend but one centre's doors remained firmly shut.

Bolton Community Leisure, which runs leisure centres in Horwich, Farnworth, Westhoughton and the Jason Kenny Centre, took the decision to keep their site at Leverhulme Park closed.

The centre is not yet open to the public due as certain safety guidelines cannot be met at the site.

There are plans to reopen the leisure centre in the future when it is safe to do so.

Mahendra Patel, contract manager, said: "Following the recent government announcement that indoor leisure facilities could reopen from July 25 and lengthy discussions with the council, we took the decision to reopen four of our leisure centres.

"There is a reduced service on offer at each centre due to social distancing and safety guidelines.

"However, we are confident the measures we have in place will keep both customers and employees safe while we adapt to this new way of operating.

"Leverhulme Park Leisure Centre was not reopened on July 25, a decision made in conjunction with the council.

"At this centre, we have identified issues around our ability to enforce current social distancing and safety guidelines, which include strict rules around air ventilation.

"Once we are confident all safety considerations have been met, we will look to reopen Leverhulme Park Leisure Centre.

"Reassuring our members and employees that coming to their centre is a safe thing to do has always been our number one reopening priority.

"People know how important a strong immune system is in fighting back against covid-19, but it's up to us to ensure we provide a safe place for customers to get their fitness fix, and a place colleagues can feel comfortable working in."

New guidelines have been put in place at the centres, including pre-booking gym and swimming slots and customers being encouraged to shower at home.

Cllr Adele Warren said: "Obviously it’s quite disappointing if you have a local facility and you’re not able to use. But it’s paramount that people can use these centres safely.

"Ultimately it’s about the health of our community when considering the reopening of the centre and reducing health risks.

"I am disappointed that it is not able to reopen but I can completely understand why it’s remaining closed.

"But we still have parks in the area and there’s lot of activities people can do to keep fit and active.

"I look forward to the centre reopening when it is safe to do so."
