The Government's decision to add Spain to its list of quarantine countries has been met with frustration from the travel industry and holidaymakers.

Under current guidelines this means holidaymakers returning from Spain will have to self-isolate for 14 days.

Spain was added to the list on Sunday July 26, with the guidance being updated on Monday to included Spanish islands such as the Balearic and Canary Islands.

Don Bircham, of Hays Travel North West, which has branches in Horwich and Westhoughton, said: "The safety of our customers is always paramount for us but this blanket decision on travel to and from Spain is very disappointing.

"The spikes in Covid-19 cases have been in Catalonia and the Basque region while major tourist areas on the Costa del Sol and in the Balearic and Canary Islands have lower infection rates than the UK.

"We expect that quarantine for those islands may be lifted quite quickly and indeed our customers seem to share that view as we are still taking bookings for those areas for late August and September.

"Holidays remain available for Greece, Turkey, Italy and France and again interest remains high."

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) is now advising against all but essential travel to the country, although those already travelling in Spain do not have to leave early.

Meanwhile Cllr Andy Morgan has urged people to respect government guidance after his holiday to Portugal, already on the quarantine list, was cancelled.

He said: "We're really not happy about it but we've got to do what we need to stop a second spike.

"Lot's of people have been making silly arguments about why they should go on holiday, but if the government say it's not safe they we should listen to them.

"It's disappointing for everybody but we've got an opportunity to support the UK tourism industry.

"We're lucky that we live in such a great place, with plenty on our doorstep. We have to make the most of it and support local businesses."

There are also fears regarding the impact of self-isolation for those who are self-employed.

Bolton mum Alison Regan should be flying to Menorca with her family on August 11.

However, being self-employed she is concerned about how she will be affected by the 14 day isolation, if those restrictions remain in place.

Mrs Regan, who trains gas engineers, said: "Being self-employed I cannot afford to self-isolate, I've already got bookings for the rest of August and I would lose a lot of money if I couldn't work. We're just in limbo at the moment."
