CRIMINALS tried to make off with four tonnes of copper wire stolen from a HGV in Bolton.

The gang were using a white Ford Transit van and black Mercedes car to load their swag and make a get away when they were spotted by police.

Officers pursued the two vehicles through to town to an undisclosed caravan park where they found the vehicles had been abandoned.

Fortunately they were able to recover the stolen copper wire which is worth several thousands of pounds.

As they carried out their investigations police discovered that the van was stolen and on false plates.

Both vehicles have been recovered by officers for scenes of crime examination.

In a statement on social media, NW Motorway police said: "This van and Mercedes has just been involved in a theft from a HGV.

"Sighted and pursued in Bolton by ME14. Both vehicles were abandoned on a nearby caravan park.

"The stolen goods (4 tonnes of copper wire) were recovered and the transit found to be an outstanding stolen motor vehicle on false plates.

"Vehicles recovered for SOCO exam."
