An investigation has been launched by the RSPCA after several animals were found hanged from trees in woodland.
The animal welfare charity received shocking reports that squirrels and pigeons, some of them mutilated, were hanging from trees behind Parrenthorn High School in Prestwich.
It is not yet known if the animals were dead before they were hanged, or if that's how they died.
Over the course of two weeks, four dead pigeons - one which had been gutted - and two squirrels - one with its tail missing - have been found hanging from the trees.
RSPCA inspector Jessica Araujo, who is investigating, said: “This is a very unusual situation and one which is also very concerning.
“We don’t know exactly what has happened - whether the animals were dead before they were mutilated, or if they were hanged and that’s how they died. Either way, it is a worrying scenario.
"The animals have all been found in different positions. It is hard to understand why someone would do this. I am urging anyone with information to get in touch with us so we can look into it further.”
Anyone with information about the incident should contact the RSPCA’s appeals line on 0300 123 8018.
The RSPCA have pixelated the image due to the nature of the incident.
