OFFICERS have broken up a wedding reception in Blackburn with over 100 guests.

The Blackburn and Darwen policing team were alerted to reports of a breach of coronavirus restrictions earlier this evening.

When they arrived at the scene, they found over 100 people celebrating a wedding.

A spokesman for the force said: "Disappointing incident in Blackburn this evening.

"Officers have attended a report of a significant breach of covid restrictions, and found over 100 guests at a wedding reception.

"This is a clear breach of both local and national restrictions that puts everyone attending at risk.

"Officers have engaged with the attendees and at police instruction the gathering was dispersed without further issue.

"Please work with us to help keep everyone safe by following the guidelines and restrictions."

No wedding receptions are able to take place in Blackburn due to the current coronavirus restrictions affecting the area and other parts of the North West.

Wedding and civil ceremonies are permitted in the borough, with up to 30 guests allowed.

National guidance allows up to 30 people to attend a sit-down meal in order to celebrate a wedding.

Police have not yet confirmed where the reception took place.
