PUPILS and staff at a Bolton school didn’t look forward to their lunch breaks with the usual enthusiasm back in 1991 - but it was all in a good cause.

Sharples School was taking part in the Save the Children’s Fund’s Skip-a-Life campaign.

Staff could either miss their lunch and donate what they would have spent to the fund or buy two lunches with the money for the second lunch going to the fund.

Pupils were being encouraged to give the money they would usually spend on mid morning or mid afternoon snacks to the fund. One classroom alone raised £11 in just one week which might not sound that much but would be sufficient to feed a staring family in Africa for a week.

“This latest venture is the most recent in a string of fund-raising events,” said Jenny Mulheran, head of special needs at the school.

“Everyone at the school has been marvellous and have given most generously.”

With no lunch, some members of staff used the time to catch up on some marking while in the school dining hall although they weren’t taking things too seriously!
