MORE than 50 new cases of coronavirus have been confirmed across the borough as stricter measures were introduced to stop the spread of the virus.

Figures from Public Health England released yesterday afternoon confirmed 54 new cases across the borough.

A total of 2,794 people have now tested positive for covid-19 since the start of the pandemic – equivalent to 972 cases per 100,000 people, nearly double the national average of 537.

Of these infections, 232 people with the illness who were treated at Royal Bolton Hospital have now died.

The most recent death related to coronavirus at the borough's hospital was recorded last week, on September 2.

Hospital deaths linked to coronavirus passed 200 back in May, and have been climbing slowly since – often with a number of weeks between each report.

Across the UK, an extra 2,420 cases were confirmed, taking the total infection count to 352,520.
