FIVE of the ten places in England with the highest coronavirus infection rates are in Lancashire.

It comes as the whole county braces itself for a lockdown announcement this afternoon.

Hyndburn, Burnley, Rossendale, Blackburn with Darwen and Preston all feature among the 10 places in the country with the highest rates of infection, which is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

Data for the most recent three days (September 15-17) has been excluded as it is incomplete and likely to be revised.

In Bolton, 546 new cases were recorded in the seven days to September 14 – the equivalent of 189.9 per 100,000 people. This is the highest rate in England and it is up slightly from 186.4 in the seven days to September 7.

Hyndburn has the second highest rate, up from 80.2 to 144.4 with 117 new cases.

Preston is in third place, where the rate has risen from 93.6 to 134.8, with 193 new cases.

Areas recording sharp increases in their seven-day rates include:

– Knowsley (up from 61.6 to 114.7, with 173 new cases)

– Oldham (up from 80.1 to 110.1, with 261 new cases)

– Liverpool (up from 67.5 to 107.8, with 537 new cases)

– South Tyneside (up from 60.9 to 93.4, with 141 new cases)

The list has been calculated by the PA news agency and is based on Public Health England data published on September 17 on the Government’s coronavirus dashboard.

Here is the list in full. From left to right, it reads: name of local authority; rate of new cases in the seven days to September 14; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to September 14; rate of new cases in the seven days to September 7; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to September 7.
