AN arson attack at a Bury hostel for people with learning difficulties caused damage totalling nearly £24,000, a court heard.

Brendan Carr, 36, had set fire to his bedding at St Paul's Court, after demanding to see his social worker, Minshull Street Crown Court was told.

Jailing him for 20 months, Judge Bernard Lever said it was the fourth time he had damaged hostels, though never previously by fire.

Judge Lever added: "It is worrying that you have got quite a record for anti-social behaviour."

Carr had pleaded guilty at a previous hearing to arson being reckless as to whether life was endangered.

Justin Hayhoe, prosecuting said the defendant had been hitting doors and shouting, when staff told him it was too late to see his social worker.

Carr went to his room and moments later staff heard the fire alarm sound, the court was told.

The defendant had walked out of the building and later informed a firefighter, attending the scene, that he was responsible.

David Bruce, defending, said his client, who had a low IQ, had behavioural problems and required professional help.

Judge Lever also asked the probation service to ensure Carr was recommended for guidance courses, as part of his licence conditions.
