Fire crews were called to a crash involving two cars in Westhoughton last night.

The collision happened around 10pm on Leigh Road.

Police and ambulance crews were also called to the scene.

Watch manager Green, from Atherton Fire Station, said: "We attended and one of the vehicles looks likely to be written off and the other suffered heavy damage to the rear, although neither needed cutting out.

"Both were assessed by paramedics at the scene but I don't believe either needed to be taken to hospital.

"One of the drivers was taken into police custody after this."

Leigh Road resident Kerrie Povey, 35, said the crash made a "horrendous" noise that woke her up an made her "jump over my husband" to see what had happened.

Mrs Povey said: "Everybody came running out of their houses onto the street to see what happened.

"There were two fire engines, a rapid response police car and an ambulance that were there for ages, it looked quite bad.

"The car looked really damaged and the air bag had gone all the way through the car but the drivers had managed to get out ok.

""The sound was awful, I've never heard anything like it. It frightened the life out of me, I thought it had gone through our wall but it looks like it just missed our house and nearly hit next door's.

"It could have gone through their wall."

Greater Manchester Police have been approached for more information.
