WORK is to begin on a community mural on a listed railway bridge – and everyone can join in.
Phoenix Art Space hopes to transform the neglected and graffitied entrance to New England Bridge into a new wildlife corridor.
Artist Christina Ure worked with the community to identify a theme for the mural, which will be based on wild flowers.
People can apply to help paint the mural on New England Road in Brighton.
Sarah Davies, executive director of Phoenix Art Space, said: “The great thing about this project is we are working with the communities from the local residents, St Luke’s Church and the Friends of Brighton Greenway.
“Everyone is keen for this well-trodden route to be safer and more pleasant for people to use.”
The mural is part of Phoenix Art Space’s wider community engagement project.
Ms Davies said: “Phoenix art space is working with communities across the city to engage residents and produce arts projects together to tackle antisocial behaviour in neglected areas of the city.
“The project has been made possible by funding from Brighton and Hove City Council and support from Network Rail.”
The original plan was to involve community groups in the painting but due to coronavirus social distancing, only limited spaces will be available.
Up to five people from one household will be able to book a one-hour time slot to join in.
Ms Davies said: “Christina has made an amazing pixellated design which you can join in with by following the numbered system on the brickwork.
“All materials and equipment will be provided and it will all be on the ground level. Bring a face covering to use when social distancing is more difficult and wear old clothes that you don’t mind getting messy.”
The painting days will take place on Saturday, October 10, and Saturday, October 17, between 11am and 2pm.
