MANCHESTER'S hugely popular Christmas Markets have been cancelled due to the continuing fears over rising coronavirus numbers.

The markets, which attract thousands of visitors to Manchester City Centre, have now gone the way of the city's organised Bonfire night events, the formal switching on of Christmas lights and New Year's Eve fireworks displays, in being called off.

"We understand that cancelling events will come as a blow to many people," said Cllr Luthfur Rahman.

"We don't take these decisions easily."

"Public safety must be at the front and centre of everything we do," he added.

The council has confirmed there will be Christmas lights throughout the city centre, with the return of the Giant Santa along with a trail of light sculptures.

The Skate Manchester ice rink in Cathedral Gardens will also be open with limited entry numbers to ensure social distancing.

All events will be subject to coronavirus regulations, however, and could be affected if local Covid-19 guidelines change.
