FIREFIGHTERS tackled a rubbish fire in a basement at an empty house this morning.

Three fire engines were sent to Park Road in Halliwell at around 9.15am after a quantity of waste was ablaze.

Crews used three hose reels and six breathing apparatus to extinguish the flames.

A neighbouring property was evacuated as a precaution. but no-one was reported to have been hurt.

Police also attended to manage traffic.

Firefighters were on the scene for around an hour-and-a-half.
