A UNIQUE hotel which opened just before lockdown and housed key workers is now welcoming the public for “staycation” trips.

Q-Square in Queen Square, Brighton, first opened its doors to holiday-makers back in February.

But it was not long before the property, which is run by Supercity Aparthotels, was instead providing accommodation for healthcare staff and other workers on the frontline of the pandemic.

Q-Square is made up of 61 individual suites which are self-contained flats, and the company aims to combine the luxury of a traditional hotel with the privacy and facilities of a private home.

Manager Ryan Bonner said: “It’s been a very different year to what we were expecting but I think that’s been the case for everyone.

“During lockdown we had all sorts of key workers staying here at heavily discounted rates, from doctors and nurses to drivers and prison wardens.

“Since opening to the public it’s been fantastic. We’re trading well with high occupancy.

“We have long-term lets which range from a couple of months to one person who has moved in for two years.”

Mr Bonner believes people are particularly attracted to Q Square due to its pet-friendly self-contained suites.

They come with modern fitted kitchens and stylish living areas.

He said: “Most definitely our apartments appeal to people as they’re safe and secure.

“A lot of the more traditional hotels have seen their trade drop off.

The Argus:

“We’ve also got a gym for people staying on-site, and our fourth and fifth floor suites have fantastic sea views.

“Brighton has historically been very popular over Christmas but we’ll see what happens in December.”

Mr Bonner said Q Square also plans to open a bar soon, which will be open to the public.

The business is also offering guests guided tours and a curated “City Secrets” guide to help them explore the city, from information on Brighton’s Regency architecture to its vibrant street art scene.

Q Square is the most recent Supercity Aparthotel to open in the UK.

The company has been running serviced apartment hotels since 2009, with four properties in London and one in Manchester.

Alexis Burton, chief executive of Supercity Aparthotels, said: “We’re thrilled to be officially launching Q Square in Brighton.

The Argus:

“It is a truly unique city, brimming with individuality, where - as an independently run, family business - we feel right at home.

“The sense of community and togetherness is extraordinary, and it was a pleasure to do our bit and accommodate the city’s healthcare heroes earlier in the year.

“With a unique balance of superb facilities, flexibility and the very highest standards in health and safety, we’re delighted to be able to offer guests a safe and secure staycation.”
