A GREAT  woman has celebrated her 100th birthday.

Mary Dolphin, who has lived on both sides of the Pennines during her life, received a visit from the mayor of Bolton, Cllr Linda Thomas, on Thursday.

The mayor’s office arranged for a bouquet of flowers and card to be delivered before Cllr Thomas and her consort, her husband Len, wished her a happy birthday at her doorstep.

The great grandmother-of-one was shocked by the visit and enjoyed the mayor’s rendition of “Happy Birthday”.

Cllr Thomas said Mary – who always used to join in with the work of many organisations and volunteered her help – is “as bright as a button”.

Mary's son Graham, 71, said: "We are very proud of my mother for reaching this milestone age.

"She is still very independent and likes to travel. If it had not been for coronavirus she would have been going on holiday this year."

Mary was married to her husband Henry for more than 40 years died around 20 years ago and moved to Bolton following his death.

Both of her parents lived to an old age and her brother George lived into his 80s.
