LEGENDARY screen siren Audrey Hepburn was this week named Style Icon of The Century.

The actress, who won an Oscar for her performance alongside Gregory Peck in 1953's Roman Holiday, pipped Marilyn Monroe and Twiggy to the title.

Hepburn's brunette up-do and black shift dress in the romantic classic Breakfast at Tiffany's in 1961 secured her place as the style icon for a generation of women.

The poll was conducted by Debenhams.

Jackie O, wife of the late American president John F Kennedy, came fourth while Victoria Beckham finished off the top five.

The wife of footballer David Beckham, who is currently on a reunion tour with the Spice Girls, has been the UK's top style icon for ten years, constantly changing her look and hairstyles.

Sixth place in the poll went to the ever-changing Queen of Pop Madonna, while another Hollywood legend, Elizabeth Taylor, aged 75, is at number seven.

French film star Brigitte Bardot was voted in at eight followed by supermodel Kate Moss.

Completing the top ten is Austin Powers actress Liz Hurley, who shot to instant fame when she vowed crowds in a revealing Versace dress at the 1994 premiere of Four Weddings and a Funeral.
