A cafe owner has thanked the spirit of the Bolton public as town centre businesses fight for survival during the coronavirus.

A week on since tier 3 restrictions were imposed on Greater Manchester "footfall couldn't get any lower", according to Alex Mcvey, the owner of Odessa in Exchange Street.

Mr Mcvey said: "It's definitely been awkward over the last week.

"Footfall couldn't really get any lower and people don't seem as confident to go out anymore with further restrictions.

"The way that these restrictions are announced make people think that everywhere has closed, it's announced as a tier 3 'lockdown' when it's just more restrictions, so people think it's a full lockdown again.

"I don't know how much longer it can go on like this."

However, Alex has thanked the community spirit of Bolton for sticking behind the local businesses during this time.

He added: "The response of local people to the news last week that more restrictions were coming again was great.

"They really came and gave us their support.

"Even if we're losing out on many regulars and footfall with offices and other places closed we know Bolton is still behind us."
