Residents were left stranded after heavy rain made their road impassable - and forecasters have warned there's more on the way.

Rolling black clouds have unleashed downpours on the town in recent days, with the newly darker evenings already creating much-to-be-desired winter nights.

One road has seen its residents effectively trapped by significant amounts of flooding, as accessibility to it has all but gone.

Deborah Collinson, 56, lives in Clayton Avenue in Haulgh, and said that she is worried that she might not be able to get the essential supplies she needs.

Having broken her leg several weeks ago, Deborah is particularly anxious about getting the things she needs.

She said: "Because of my accident, I have had people bringing things to me but the flooding in the road has really excelled itself. Some neighbours have attempted to get through it but most have had to turn back.

"You don't know what's under it too. There could be bottles and bricks and even the water can cause unrepairable damage to your car."

Deborah said that some councillors have been helpful in the residents plight, but she would like more permanent measures put in place.

She has said she hopes that by highlighting the issue, the council may be more helpful for roads regularly affected by flooding.

The Environment Agency has recently urged communities to stay vigilant ahead of the expected continuation of the wet weather.

Heavy and persistent rain could bring surface water and river flooding to communities over the weekend and people are being asked to check their flood risk

An Environment Agency spokesperson said: “Successive bouts of heavy and persistent rainfall could bring surface water and river flooding to communities across parts of northern England from today and into early next week.

" River flooding is possible from Friday onwards, with continuous rainfall possibly leading to an escalation of the flood risk in the coming days.

"There is also a chance of localised flooding from tomorrow and into early next week."
